Biking in Denmark

Written by a 16-year-old intern at Relocare in 2019

A culture in itself

Biking in Denmark is a larger part of the citizens everyday life than you should think.

You could go so far as saying, that everybody bikes.

We bike much in Denmark, because the state and the local authority’s puts a lot of money in their project to get everyone on a bike -make them love it. And we do. Actually, so many people in Denmark loves biking or see it as a fast way to get from A to B that Copenhagen have invested in city bikes. These have been used so much, that in 2013 Copenhagen upgraded them so they now have an incorporate computer and GPS.

All over Denmark are there long and practical cycle tracks and secured roads, so it’s as safe as it can be for everyone to bike. I believe that could be a reason why so many parents let their kids cycle alone to school from an early age. As a parent, is it very reassuring to know, that when you send your kid out alone, they come home safe.

Although, not only kids bike to and from school. Also, many adults choose the bike over the car to their job, with their kids, on vacations and even older people who bike to get fresh air and exercise.

Not only do Danes love biking to their job, school or a friend’s house. It is also a popular sport for all ages. Cycle clubs who bike together after work or school, mountain biking in the woods, BMX tracks in the youth centre and races like Den-mark around, are activities that all include the love Danes have for cycling.

Many people from around the world, find it interesting how the bikes are being used by all ages in the society and how we learn our kids to love it from an early age. A lot of parents even have seats on their bike for the youngest in the family so that they can sit on the back of the bike while the parents drive it. Or a vehicle hanging on after the bike with kids in.

Denmark uses the bike as a mean of transport, for fun, to get around town fast, for tourists and plenty of more things. Many municipalities also invest in curses for the kids, so they know the rules there is in traffic for cyclists. Not only do you exercise from biking, you also spare the environment when you use your car less.

It’s a lifestyle in Denmark, a culture in itself.
