Payments in Denmark

Cash or card?

Getting rid of your money won’t be a problem when relocating to Denmark.

Denmark is considered to be one of the most expensive countries in Europe to relocate to, and to purchase daily day supplies. To Relocare’s experience that is not exactly so. But you do need to know the way to shop in Denmark.

As a small example: The yellow signs are often offers, and many times you will find dual prices on the price cards in the shop. As an example one for 5 two for 8 DKK.

Sometimes the 5 DKK is written in a small font size- other times it is the 8 DKK which is written in small.

You need to carefully read the price tags in order to fully know which offer you best can take, and which is fitting to your needs.

In most shops you can pay with payment cards like VISA, American Express or MasterCard. Most Danes own a national payment card called a Dankort – which is very often combined with VISA.

Relocare will be happy to guide you through shopping and paying in shops and on the internet as well. It is also a part of our cultural course Meeting Denmark.

earning money and doing payments

The Danish monetary system is based on the currency Danish kroner, DKK. One krone is 100 øre.

The Danish krone is a fairly strong currency tied to the Euro. You can check the actual rate on the internet or at your local bank, but normally 7,5 DKK would buy one Euro.

At this website, you will find the accurate exchange rate, as well as a currency converter.

If you pay cash, it might be worth knowing the range of coins and bills.

The smallest coin is 50 øre, followed by 1 krone, 2 kroners, 5 kroners, 10 kroners and 20 kroners coins. The bills are: 50 kroners, 100 kroners, 200 kroners, 500 kroners and 1.000 kroners.
